Captain Dinesh Karthik and Andre Russell helped Kolkata Knight Riders thump Rajasthan Royals out of this cricket season's Indian Premier League with a 25-run win in the eliminator on Wednesday.
Karthik, who made 52, and Russell, who crushed 49 not out, helped Knight Riders to 169-7, an aggregate their bowlers shielded by limiting Royals to 144-4 at Kolkata's Eden Gardens.
Leg-spinner Piyush Chawla guaranteed two wickets including dangerman Sanju Samson for 50 to stifle Royals out of the do-or-pass on challenge of the money rich Twenty20 competition.
Captain Ajinkya Rahane, who made 46, and Samson put on 62 keeps running for the second wicket as Royals' pursuit looked on course at 109-1. Yet, Rahane's wicket spelt inconvenience for the 2008 champions.
Left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav, who got Rahane captured and rocked the bowling alley, returned great figures of 1-18 to keep Knight Riders alive in the title race.
"We were at first under the pump, so great on us to return," Karthik said in the post-coordinate introduction.
"Andre was simply unique. In these sort of recreations the score doesn't make a difference, it's tied in with accepting.
"The bowlers have picked their diversion and have rocked the bowling alley some great balls... Each amusement is essential this stage. Next amusement, two great groups contending," the wicketkeeper-batsman included.
Two-time champions Knight Riders will now meet Sunrisers Hyderabad in the second qualifier in Kolkata on Friday to attempt and book a title conflict with Chennai Super Kings.
