The New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays seemingly turned their Wednesday afternoon outing into a WWE wrestling match for a brief moment. During the bottom half of the sixth inning, Yankees’ outfielder Brett Gardner attempted to beat out a ground ball to the pitcher while taking out Rays’ first baseman Rickie Weeks, Jr. in the process.
Both Gardner and Weeks exited the game as a result of the play while the former suffered a bruised jaw and strained neck with the latter sustaining both neck and shoulder soreness.
While the Rays were leading 3-2 at the time of the collision, the Yankees then took a one-run, 4-3 lead as a result of a throwing error. It is also worth noting that though Weeks is an infielder by trade, he is not typically positioned at first base, which presumably led to the viciousness of the impact.
