1996 NLCS (ATL @ STL) Game 4

1996 NLCS (ATL @ STL) Game 4

The Cardinals looked to take control of the NLCS with a Game Five victory, but trailing by three in the 7th, it looked as if the Braves were going to even the series at 2-2. Enter Braves reliever Greg McMichael, and a two-out seventh inning rally, featuring a pinch-hit triple from Dimitri Young, and an infield single by Royce Clayton to tie the game. Brian Jordan pulled a changeup into the Cardinals bullpen in the bottom of the 8th to give St. Louis a 4-3 lead, and Dennis Eckersley shut the Braves down to put the Cards one win away from their first World Series berth since 1987, and judging by the on-field celebration after the game, you would have thought it was a foregone conclusion.

Unfortunately for the Cardinals and their fans, the Braves demolished the Redbirds by a combined score of 32-1 over the final three games of the series to capture the National League flag.

Among the most confusing decisions made by the Cardinals over those final three games were:

Starting Todd Stottlemyre on three days rest in Game Five instead of Alan Benes.

Starting Donovan Osborne instead of Andy Benes in Game Seven.

Playing Ray Lankford, given his damaged shoulder.

Starting Mike Gallego ever, for any reason.
